What is the ‘Talk Test’?

A basic way to estimate exercise intensity.

The Talk Test is one of the most basic methods to estimate your exercise intensity. It uses your ability to talk (and sing) during exercise as a measure of how hard you’re exercising.
Light Intensity
If you can sing the verses of your favorite song while exercising, you’re probably exercising at a light intensity.
Moderate Intensity
If you can comfortably carry on a brief conversation while exercising but cannot comfortably sing your favorite song, you’re probably exercising at a moderate intensity.
Thirty minutes of moderate intensity exercise, five days a week, is the minimum amount of exercise recommended for all adults to promote and maintain health;more is recommended to lose weight and keep it off.
Hard (Vigorous) Intensity
If you need to catch your breath in order to respond to a question, you’re probably exercising at a hard or vigorous intensity.
